MAY 2018

The finer things in life don’t fly off an automated assembly line… but are designed and handcrafted by local artisans.  Our May event featured four Louisville companies that are creating some amazing products.  We met the men who founded these brands and experienced what they’ve created.

Barrell Bourbon Founder, Joe Beatrice carefully selects small numbers of barrels and combines them to make batches of bourbon, with the intent that each batch will be very special and unique, and everything they do is barrel-proof.  This is a very different approach from most bourbon producers which are seeking consistency.  Barrell Bourbon has received numerous awards including Best Bourbon and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and Finalist (98 Points) in the Ultimate Spirits Challenge.  Every guest went home with a Barrell Bourbon Glencairn glass!

Clayton & Crume makes high-quality, handcrafted leather items, such as coasters, wallets and belts.  They search far and wide for the perfect hides to use in each product and source only full-grain leather from the best tanneries on earth.  Company Founders, Clay and Tyler have generously offered their spacious venue for our event.  All guests got to hand-press a couple of their own leather coasters to take home.

Kentucky Straight Ice Founder, Rich Finck is passionate about ice!  He makes high-end cubes, spheres and hand-chiseled ice shapes using Kentucky limestone filtered water, and applying a unique freezing process that results in crystal clear ice that is extremely dense, melts slowly and enhances the flavor of bourbon.

Southern Smoke BBQ.  Owner, Chris Hadley is a certified BBQ judge who has judged and competed at many BBQ competitions throughout the region.  Recently Chris won Grand Champion (1st place overall) at the BBQ Smoke Off competition in Bowling Green.  Southern Smoke “put some South in our mouth” with pulled pork sliders, smoked mac & cheese and cobbler.

We did the event in a relaxed format where we got to mingle, speak with these different craftsmen, learn about, and enjoy their products.
