Rob Samuels, President of Maker’s Mark, invited us to join him on the first day of summer for a very special bourbon experience.  He recently opened an aging cellar for Maker’s 46 and a new restaurant at the distillery in Loretto, and Rob was eager to show it off.

We departed from Louisville on the Bourbon Bus, a special luxury motorcoach supplied by our good friends at R&R Limousine.  We traveled in chauffeured first-class style with multiple video screens, a bourbon bar, chicken strips from Chick-fil-A and even a bathroom!

Upon arrival in Loretto, we began our adventure, specially designed for the Bourbon Brotherhood.  We started with a short talk with Rob on the patio overlooking the beautiful distillery grounds.

After a tasting of high and low wine, we headed over to Star Hill Provisions restaurant, located at the beautifully renovated Distiller’s House where we enjoyed cocktails and appetizers.  The restaurant offers acclaimed locally sourced and inspired cuisine from Chef Newman Miller and his team.

Then we took a tour of the new limestone aging cellar, which was blasted out of the hillside, followed by a tasting of bourbons finished with the various staves that are used to create the unique flavor profile of Maker’s 46.

The day ended with a return trip to Louisville featuring chocolate chip cookies and of course, more bourbon.
